Product Queries

There are a few different ways in which you can identify which bearing you require for your machine,

Almost all bearings that we supply will be stamped with the bearing reference on the side,

image of the bearing reference on the inner race of the bearing image of the bearing reference on the outer race of the bearing image of the bearing reference on the metal shield of the bearing image of the bearing reference on the rubber seal of the bearing
On the Inner Race On the Outer Race On the Metal Shield On the Rubber Seal

These part numbers sometime are not the easiest to read therefore the bearing might require cleaning with an oily rag, or you may need a magnifying glass to see what the part number is.

Once you have found the part number then type that into our search box at the top of the page or use the search box below and you should find the bearing you are looking for.

If you cannot find the part number or the bearing is worn or damaged, you will need to measure the bearing to figure out which part you need. To do this you will need to use a Vernier caliper, and you will need to get three dimensions.

image of the bearing reference on the inner race of the bearing image of the bearing reference on the outer race of the bearing image of the bearing reference on the metal shield of the bearing
Inside Diameter Outside Diameter Width

These three measurements will give you the dimensions that you will need to find the bearing you are searching for. Once you have the dimension sizes, type it into our search box in the following order; Inside Diameter, Outside Diameter, and width and our search engine will feed back the products that fit those dimensions.

If you already have the part number or dimensions for the bearing you require you can use our search box in the top corner of our website or use the search box below to find the product that you require, this search engine will bring up alternative brands and variations to the product you are looking for along with the product that you require.

While our website is always being updated with new products and brands, we cant guarantee that we have the product you require on our website.

Do not fear, if you cant find the product on our website you can give our helpful and friendly sales staff a call on 0808 168 1234 or email sales@qualitybearingsonline.com and they will endeavour to find what you require to get your machinery up and running as quickly as possible to help reduce your downtime to a minimum.

This question normally comes down to the environment the bearings are being used it. For example, if the bearing is being used in a moist environment then you’d choose rubber or metal as the metal is more likely to rust.

If the environment is very contaminated, then you might choose a rubber seal to keep the contaminants from damaging the inside of the bearing.

Your decision could also come down to the temperature the bearing needs to work to or the speeds it needs to reach.

The internal clearance of a bearing refers to the room around the balls or rollers where they sit between the inner and outer race. When a bearing is working, they heat up and the balls/rollers expand causing friction.

This is known as the limiting speed; what speed can the bearing do with all factors considered?

If a bearing has C3 clearance it is defined as having a greater internal clearance. This means that the balls/rollers can expand a bit more before the friction starts to limit its speed.

The difference between a C3 bearing and a standard clearance bearing isn’t visible; the amount of extra clearance is tiny, but still helps with bearings performance.

There are two main kinds of seal used with bearings: Rubber seals and metal shields.

In terms of maintenance, both types of seal can easily be removed by using dowel tool or small screwdriver

To remove the seal, slide the end of the tool, or whatever you choose, around the edge of the seal until it slides underneath. The seal will simply pop off, and you can then see the small balls inside the bearing.

Be aware that while you can remove a rubber seal, you can put the seal back on (if you do not damage during removal), you can’t do that with the metal shields as they distort when removed.

The DU/RS reference refers to a single seal and DDU/2RS refers to a bearing with a seal on both sides of the bearing.

Certain manufacturers have different references on their bearings and some put the references on the seals or shields, which means that they may put the reference down as a DU/RS as that bearing can then be used for either a single sealed/shielded bearing or a bearing with a seal on both sides of the bearing.

The ABEC scale is an industry accepted standard for ball bearing tolerances.

It was developed by the Annular Bearing Engineering Committee (ABEC) of the American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA).

There are five classes, going from the widest tolerances to tightest: 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

Higher ABEC classes provide better precision, efficiency, and greater speed capabilities, but do not necessarily mean that the bearing can reach higher operating speeds.

Additionally, the ABEC rating does not specify many other critical factors, such as smoothness of the rolling contact surfaces, ball precision, and material quality.

Sometimes the products that have been ordered have been updated/replaced/obsolete, so in these instances we will endeavour to supply you the latest/most up to date product we can.

R&M, Hoffmann and Pollard were all British bearing manufacturers in the 1960/1970’s but all merged into one company called RHP, so if you have ordered one of the old branded bearings we will try and source an exact replacement but if they are no longer available, we will offer you the equivalent product in RHP.

Some manufacturers update their products and change the suffixes, for instance, FAG recently brought out an updated range of products called the X-Life range, these products are the same basic bearings but they have been improved so they may have an extended lifespan, these products will have an XL in the reference, but they are the same bearing.

FAG also brought out a new range of Deep Groove Radial Ball Bearings, which are the C series, these bearings have a slightly different reference on them from the original parts but once again they are the same bearing just an improved version of it, so the references have changed from 2ZR/2RSR to C-2Z/C-2HRS.
